That is correct.  One issue you'll run into is the fact that the database are already at a later configuration stage than that of the original installation software due to the application of the hotfix rollups.

This means the software may not install because it sees a version difference in the database.

In all honesty, I would not do a reinstallation of the software to fix the problems you outlined.  I would try a Repair first and if that doesn't work, I'd call Microsoft.

I mentioned SQL 2005 SP2 because we had to reinstall the entire server, not just CRM, and there are issues with that process.

		<description>I'm getting ready to do a 3.0 reinstall, I have errors here and ther, can't access reports at all and a laptop that continues to shutdown outlook.  I've applied the rollups to both client and server - so I would like to start fresh.  In your post here I don't see anything specific about backing up the db, I am assuming I just need to back up the Metabase and MSCRM databases  ???   
Also you mention SP2 for SQL 2005, since this is referring to a re-install what do I do if SP2 is already installed?</description>
