  • In the age of blogs, are electronic newsletters relevant?

Posted on July 9th, 2007 mitch Print Print 2 comments

    Greetings Everyone,

I have had on my list of things to do, adding a monthly electronic company newsletter to the list of offerings I provide.

This past weekend, while reviewing my notes and planning the coming week, I started thinking about it again.

But to be quite honest, I'm really not sure that I need a newsletter.  Here's why:

    1) The information that I post on my blog is much more time-sensitive since I usually post it when I see it or do it rather than waiting for a specific time of the week or month.

    2) Blogs are interactive and public so you can have "conversations" with readers through the comment process.

The only reason that I can think of for having an electronic newsletter is the fact that not everyone reads blogs ( and doesn't know about RSS ) and if it doesn't show up in their inbox, they never see it.

If you have an opinion on the issue, I'd love to hear it so please leave a comment.

    Thanks, Mitch

    1. I personally don't think you need a newsletter. If people find your site valuable, they're going to visit every few days or weeks to see if something has changed. If they don't, they probably start to delete your email after the third time without even reading it.

The web changes and Blogs are becoming more and more popular. It changes the way information is delivered and in a few years we won't see too much newsletters anymore. Instead we will see personalized feeds, letting the users decide what content to be delivered into their feed reader. I'm going to implement that into my own site whenever I have time, but I'm totally convinced that this is what is going to happen.

    2. I'm sure your newsletter can be replaced by your blog, but before you sing a dirge for it, consider your audience. I still have a co-worker who prefers e-mails to IMs, some people still read newspapers, and some may still enjoy sifting through a newsletter. Since it's pushed instead of pulled, they may enjoy receiving news then finding it.

You may want to ask your readers which they prefer through a vote in your next– maybe last newsletter.

Personally, I prefer blogs to newsletters, but I still give them a read if sent to me, though if they stopped, I wouldn't really miss them…
