In case you ever need to know.  If your battery ever runs low on water, the battery light comes on.

After refilling the water, you probably need to drive around a bit to allow the alternator to recharge the battery to a stable state.

It would appear that on a 2002 F-150, the optimum recharge RPM is 2,000. Below that, the battery light stays lit. Above 3,000 RPM, the same thing happens.   So, this means you need to drive around at about 65 MPH ( American ) to archive the desired recharge capabilities.

  • I feel like Mister Rogers

Posted on July 18th, 2007 mitch Print Print No comments

My office has five workstations and servers in it which combined, have a tendency to overwhelm the room's air conditioning.  I keep a white tee-shirt hung on the door and most days, I put that tee-shirt on and hang up whatever shirt I wore that day.

This morning, when I was changing shirts, I realized that I had unknowningly turned into Mister Rogers.  Albeit with a tee-shirt instead of a sweater.

Getting old I tell you. Old.

  • Understanding CRM Email Contact Methods and Restrictions

Posted on July 14th, 2007 mitch Print Print No comments

As you can imagine, email is one of the most powerful features within CRM. And since it is possible to over-use even the best tools, CRM allows you to determine, by contact, how people can be contacted.

When you look at the Administrative tab on the Contact form, you will find various methods of contact for the CRM Contact:

    search_contacts_1

Today, we'll be discussing the E-mail and Bulk E-mail options.

    Overview

When you are sending email within the system, CRM will automatically take these two settings into account and if either is set to Do Not Allow, it will not send email to the Contact.

When working with a Marketing Campaign, the Contact will automatically be eliminated from the Campaign.

When sending an individual email, you will receive a warning as shown below:

    search_contacts_3

    Performing an Advanced Search

If you are a heavy user of the Advanced Search feature, you can replicate this functionality by specifying additional search attributes.

The easiest method for creating an Advanced Search is to open an existing view that mostly produces the results you wish to see.  We'll be using the Active Contacts in this example.

Click on the Advanced Search button and you will see something resembling the following:

    image

Click on the Select link and add a new search attribute, as shown below:

    image

This will return results for all Active Contacts what have the Do not allow E-mails set to Allow.

Click the Save As button and save this Advanced Find for use later.

But what about the Bulk E-mail setting?

When you are adding Attributes to the search criteria, you will notice that the Do not allow bulk E-mail Attribute is not listed.  This is by-design, but you can change it using the following instructions.

Note: You must be part of the System Administrators or System Customizer roles to perform the following operation.

Note 2: You must also have Hotfix Rollup 1 or Hotfix Rollup 2 installed.

    1) Select Settings, Customization, Customize Entities.

    2) Open the Contact Entity.

    3) Open the donotbulkemail Attribute, which should look something like this:

    search_contacts_2

    4) If the Searchable Attribute is set to No, change it to Yes.

    5) Click the Save and Close button.

    6) Publish the Contact Entity.

If you go back to Advanced Find, you'll notice that you now have access the Do not allow Bulk E-mails Attribute:

  • Cool Time Zone Utility

Posted on July 14th, 2007 mitch Print Print No comments

I am in contact with people all over the world and I often find myself wondering if they are at work, or at least awake, should I need to email or IM them.  After trying several utilities that would show multiple time zones, I finally found one while listening to an episode of Hanselminutes, that I would recommend.  Mostly because it's free and keeps out of the way.

    Microsoft Time Zone.

After being installed and configured, it runs as a Tool Tray application.  Clicking on the icon, produces something similar to this:

    mstimezone

  • CardScan for Microsoft Dynamics CRM

Posted on July 14th, 2007 mitch Print Print No comments

I recently reinstalled the CardScan system after getting a new office, new server, etc. and let me tell you, it is now one of the most valuable systems in my office.

It has also changed the way I do business.  Now, when I return from a meeting or other event where I've collected business cards, I immediately scan the cards using CardScan and import them into CRM.

The software is very easy to use and the integration with CRM is fantastic.  It will even check for duplicates when you transfer the data into CRM.  The optical character recognition ( OCR ) has a very high rate of success so little editing is required.  Overall, it saves tons of time and money getting data into CRM.

So, in a nutshell, if you're using CRM and not using CardScan, you should definitely take a look at it.

Top 11 Things Not to Say While Arguing with a Woman:

    1. "Don't you have some laundry to do or something?"

    2. "No really…I was laughing about a joke I heard one time."

    3. "Ohh, you are so cute when your face gets all red and scrunched up like that."

    4. "You're just upset because your backside is beginning to spread."

    5. "Wait a minute…I get it. What time of the month is it?"

    6. "Are you gonna cry now?" (force lip to quiver mockingly)

    7. "You sure you don't want to consult the great Oprah on this one?"

    8. "Sorry. I was just picturing you naked."

    9. "Whoa, time out honey. Football is on."

    10. "Is there any way we can do this via email?"

    11. "I'm sorry, were you talking?"

  • In the age of blogs, are electronic newsletters relevant?

Posted on July 9th, 2007 mitch Print Print 2 comments

    Greetings Everyone,

I have had on my list of things to do, adding a monthly electronic company newsletter to the list of offerings I provide.

This past weekend, while reviewing my notes and planning the coming week, I started thinking about it again.

But to be quite honest, I'm really not sure that I need a newsletter.  Here's why:

    1) The information that I post on my blog is much more time-sensitive since I usually post it when I see it or do it rather than waiting for a specific time of the week or month.

    2) Blogs are interactive and public so you can have "conversations" with readers through the comment process.

The only reason that I can think of for having an electronic newsletter is the fact that not everyone reads blogs ( and doesn't know about RSS ) and if it doesn't show up in their inbox, they never see it.

If you have an opinion on the issue, I'd love to hear it so please leave a comment.

    Thanks, Mitch

  • Internet domain names: WTF?

Posted on July 1st, 2007 mitch Print Print No comments

While searching for a domain name tonight, GoDaddy helpfully suggest this an alternative:

    image

    WTF?

    Questions abound:

    1) Who cares?

    2) Somebody actually purchased this to start with and are paying annual fees to maintain it?

    3) Somebody thinks that someone who actually owns a chicken would feel like spending $500 for an Internet domain name?
